The decision marks an unprecedented shift for a major gaming studio, as Epic attempts to pioneer an "AI first" production model for a high-profile release.

The title, a multiplayer shooter featuring characters from Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars franchises, was originally slated to debut in March but currently has no set release date, according to Bloomberg. Internal communications reviewed by Bloomberg revealed that game directors told staff all code and art would now be generated via full AI workflows, with tools like Anthropic’s Claude performing the core development while human staff oversee the output.

Progress on the project had reportedly slowed as Epic underestimated the labor and time required to build the crossover game. The delay follows earlier organizational restructuring at the Fortnite creator, which cut approximately 1,000 jobs in March citing softer sales growth.

The initiative tests the operational boundaries of Disney’s $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic, announced in 2024 as part of a multi-game strategic partnership. While Epic expressed optimism that AI-accelerated development will empower its creative leads, internal staff expressed skepticism regarding the technology's readiness during a recent video conference, Bloomberg reported.
