Investing.com - Wall Street opened the week in a holding pattern. Stocks traded Monday even as the bond market stayed shut for Columbus Day, and the tape was split down the middle: the S&P 500 closed essentially flat at 7,807 (-0.06%), the Dow added 0.38%, and chipmakers dragged the Nasdaq 100 down more than 0.7% for a fifth straight losing session. The equal-weighted S&P 500 actually rose, a sign the selling stayed contained to semiconductors rather than spreading market-wide.

Citigroup has beaten earnings estimates four straight quarters - most recently on April 14, when it posted EPS of $3.06 against a $2.64 estimate - and carries a Rank #2 (Buy) on the strength of rising forward estimates, with full-year 2026 EPS projected to jump 33.25% to $10.62.

It’s been a tough year for financials. Financial Fortresses, the AI strategy holding Citigroup, has a -4.6% total return for 2026, trailing the S&P 500 Financials index by more than 5 percentage points - unsurprising given that banks have been the worst-performing sector on the S&P 500 over the past month as surging yields squeezed the group’s margins and sentiment alike. But there are signs the tide may be turning. FactSet still expects the sector’s third-quarter earnings to grow a modest 3% year-over-year, a fraction of the nearly 30% pace for the S&P 500 overall - yet most of the strategy’s holdings have quietly flipped positive this month, and Citigroup itself never stopped climbing. Our model kept the position not because the sector turned, but because Citigroup’s own numbers kept improving while everyone around it struggled.

That gets tested Tuesday. JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup itself all report before the opening bell, alongside UnitedHealth and Johnson & Johnson (Domino’s Pizza is also on some calendars this week). Analysts expect Citigroup to post EPS of $2.65 on roughly $23.7 billion in revenue. JPMorgan, the bellwether of the group, is projected to deliver EPS near $5.93-$5.94 on $51-52 billion in revenue, implying roughly 17% earnings growth year-over-year. It’s shaping up as the real test of whether banks can shake off a punishing month.

And the pressure isn’t letting up. The 10-year Treasury yield is sitting around 5.23%-5.24%, just off its October 8 peak of 5.35% - a fresh 24-year high - after the Fed, under new chair Kevin Warsh, delivered a surprise hike to 3.75%-4.00% on September 16, its first in three years. Futures markets are now pricing in at least one more hike before year-end, with UBS and most major brokerages pointing to December and BofA calling for two. Add to that a consumer that’s visibly fraying: the University of Michigan’s preliminary October sentiment reading came in at just 46.3, the second-lowest reading in data going back to 1978, behind only May’s record low of 44.8. All eyes now turn to September’s CPI report, due Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. ET, with headline inflation expected at +0.6% month-over-month and 3.6% year-over-year (up from August’s 3.4%), and core inflation at +0.2% and 2.5%. A hotter-than-expected core print could send yields and the dollar higher and put fresh pressure on growth stocks.

While financials sort themselves out, other Strategies are carrying the bulk of the load.
