Investing.com -- Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares fell more than 3% on Monday as Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) reported progress on a next-generation DRAM design that could help increase storage density and intensify competition with South Korea's chipmakers.

Samsung shares fell 3.6% to 252,500 won, while SK Hynix dropped 3.4% to 1,624,000 won. CXMT shares also declined 3.1% to 49.42 yuan.

CXMT said it had made key progress on a so-called 4F² memory-cell structure that is also being pursued by Samsung and SK Hynix. The technology is designed to fit more memory cells onto a chip, potentially increasing storage capacity while improving efficiency.

Mainstream commercial dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) currently uses a 6F² cell structure. CXMT's approach relies on a proprietary Vertical Surrounding Gate transistor, which uses a vertical gate architecture to reduce current leakage while shrinking the area occupied by each memory cell, according to the South China Morning Post.

CXMT President Cao Kanyu said at an industry event in Shanghai over the weekend that the company planned to introduce a new generation of DDR5 registered dual in-line memory modules (RDIMMs) based on the technology by the end of 2026.

The modules are designed for enterprise servers, where memory products must meet demanding requirements for reliability, endurance and compatibility.

CXMT did not disclose detailed technical specifications or a specific launch date for the new product. The commercial impact of its latest development will therefore depend on its ability to bring the technology to market and meet the requirements of server customers.
