Investing.com - DeepSeek has agreed to lead a seed financing round of tens of millions of dollars for Winverse AI, a startup building artificial intelligence for robots, according to reporting from Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter. The Hangzhou-based research lab is deploying capital from its own financing round exceeding $12 billion to support the months-old company.

The investment round includes commitments from other backers such as Meituan’s Long-Z Investments and values Winverse AI at approximately $400 million after the investment, the people said. The transaction has not been finalized and details including valuation and investor participation could change.

The deal represents one of DeepSeek’s largest startup investments since hedge fund manager Liang Wenfeng founded the firm in 2023. The investment extends DeepSeek’s reach into real-world applications including humanoid robots on factory floors. DeepSeek previously acquired a 2% stake in Unitree Robotics’s Shanghai listing to collaborate on embodied-intelligence models.

DeepSeek is close to securing at least 80 billion yuan ($12 billion) in its latest funding round, Bloomberg News has previously reported, surpassing its capital-raising target ahead of a market debut in early 2027. The capital was primarily intended for model training and data centers but may also allow the AI lab to begin backing a new generation of startups for co-development.

Winverse AI was created in 2026 by Hu Han, who last served as head of Tencent Holdings Ltd. (OTC:TCEHY) vision-language and embodied foundation model teams as lead scientist. Hu’s departure from Tencent coincided with a restructuring of the company’s AI research team.
