Investing.com – Australia stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Gold, Financials and Metals & Mining sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.64%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Austal Ltd (ASX:ASB), which rose 10.93% or 0.41 points to trade at 4.16 at the close. Meanwhile, Zip Co Ltd (ASX:ZIP) added 4.25% or 0.09 points to end at 2.21 and Objective Corp Ltd (ASX:OCL) was up 3.96% or 0.22 points to 5.77 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Paladin Energy Ltd (ASX:PDN), which fell 8.59% or 0.69 points to trade at 7.34 at the close. Orora Ltd (ASX:ORA) declined 6.32% or 0.09 points to end at 1.30 and Summerset Group Holdings Ltd (ASX:SNZ) was down 4.64% or 0.26 points to 5.34.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 631 to 443 and 377 ended unchanged.

Shares in Paladin Energy Ltd (ASX:PDN) fell to 52-week lows; down 8.59% or 0.69 to 7.34.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 3.45% to 11.07.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.07% or 2.87 to $4,180.17 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.49% or 0.46 to hit $94.60 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.52% or 0.55 to trade at $106.24 a barrel.
