Investing.com -- European banking stocks have fallen sharply over the past two weeks as rising government bond yields and mounting concerns over France’s public finances prompt investors to reassess one of the region’s strongest-performing sectors.

The Euro Stoxx Banks index has declined about 8%, reaching its lowest level since June and entering a technical correction on Thursday, according to Bloomberg.

Societe Generale, Credit Agricole and Deutsche Bank have each fallen more than 15% from their recent highs.

The selloff has been driven largely by surging sovereign bond yields, particularly in France, where political uncertainty and fiscal concerns have pushed the country’s borrowing premium over Germany to its widest in more than a decade.

Higher yields threaten to increase loan defaults, slow lending activity and reduce the value of government bonds held by banks.

"Bond yields appear to have crossed a pain threshold that has prompted investors to reassess fundamentals," said Roberto Scholtes, head of strategy at Singular Bank.

The retreat follows a three-year rally that saw European banking shares triple since 2022, leaving the sector vulnerable to profit-taking.

Bank of America’s September fund manager survey showed a net 25% of European investors were overweight banking stocks, highlighting crowded positioning.

European banking supervisors have increased scrutiny of sovereign debt exposures, which represented approximately 13% of bank assets at the end of 2025.

Regulators believe higher net interest income is largely offsetting losses on bond holdings for now.

JPMorgan strategists described the decline in French banking shares as a potential buying opportunity, assuming yields do not rise substantially further.

Morgan Stanley similarly suggested that prolonged bond market volatility would be necessary to undermine the sector’s underlying fundamentals.

Investors will now turn to third-quarter earnings reports later this month for evidence of continued lending growth and profitability.

Barclays strategists expect the results to refocus attention on banks’ financial strength after the recent market volatility.
