Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Financials and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.35%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.15%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 1.75% or 4.09 points to trade at 238.01 at the close. Meanwhile, Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 1.74% or 0.75 points to end at 43.53 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 1.74% or 6.79 points to 396.06 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which fell 5.73% or 15.12 points to trade at 248.61 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 3.33% or 26.59 points to end at 772.78 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was down 2.39% or 3.47 points to 141.98.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were CDW Corp (NASDAQ:CDW) which rose 5.71% to 151.97, Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was up 4.67% to settle at 456.37 and Charter Communications Inc (NASDAQ:CHTR) which gained 4.36% to close at 106.95.

The worst performers were Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was down 6.69% to 464.24 in late trade, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) which lost 5.73% to settle at 248.61 and Citigroup Inc (NYSE:C) which was down 5.60% to 124.53 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were JBDI Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:JBDI) which rose 251.79% to 3.43, Alaunos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TCRT) which was up 187.14% to settle at 3.02 and Pinnacle Food Group Ltd (NASDAQ:PFAI) which gained 80.08% to close at 4.70.

The worst performers were WF Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:WFF) which was down 87.27% to 2.20 in late trade, Treasure Global Inc (NASDAQ:TGL) which lost 66.90% to settle at 0.28 and Linkers Industries Ltd (NASDAQ:LNKS) which was down 57.10% to 0.97 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1374 to 1325 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2201 fell and 1222 advanced, while 184 ended unchanged.

Shares in Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) rose to all time highs; rising 4.67% or 20.37 to 456.37. Shares in Visa Inc (NYSE:V) rose to all time highs; up 1.74% or 6.79 to 396.06. Shares in Treasure Global Inc (NASDAQ:TGL) fell to all time lows; losing 66.90% or 0.56 to 0.28.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.39% to 15.27.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.10% or 4.37 to $4,181.67 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.80% or 0.75 to hit $94.89 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.73% or 0.77 to trade at $106.46 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.38% to 1.12, while USD/JPY fell 0.18% to 158.33.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.02% at 102.00.
