Investing.com --Jefferies downgraded Swiss Re to Underperform from Hold and cut its price target to 110 Swiss francs from 130, warning that softening reinsurance prices will hurt revenue more than the market expects.

Analysts Philip Kett and Derald Goh said the pace of price declines, which began in 2025 after seven years of rising rates, "has only accelerated." The Guy Carpenter Global Property-Catastrophe Rate-On-Line Index fell 8.1% at renewal in 2025 and 16% in 2026. Jefferies expects the decline to accelerate again in 2027 before slowing in 2028, with prices unlikely to bottom before 2030 absent a major catastrophe.

Swiss Re shares fell 1.8% in Zurich.

Consensus already expects Swiss Re’s property and casualty reinsurance business to post gross revenue declines in 2027 before stabilizing and returning to modest growth from 2029. Jefferies analysts view even that forecast as "too optimistic," putting their own revenue estimates 7% below consensus in 2027 and 19% below by 2030. Jefferies cut its 2027 earnings forecast by 12%.

Analysts said buybacks offer some support, expecting Swiss Re to return about $1.5 billion a year, but added they "struggle to see upside without compromising prudence."

The downgrade also reflects a valuation view. The recent hard market left industry reserves full and margins high, prompting investors to value capital buffers at trough multiples, so Swiss Re now trades in line with peers despite "an unfavorable track record" relative to competitors in past soft markets, the analysts said. As the current soft market takes hold, they expect that relative underperformance to show up in the stock.
