Investing.com-- Shares of Samsung Electronics (KS:005930) and SK Hynix (KS:000660) extended sharp losses on Tuesday over intensifying Chinese competition in memory chips and concerns around the sustainability of the artificial intelligence investment boom.

Samsung dropped 7.5% to 2,31,750 won by 02:36 GMT, while SK Hynix plunged 8.4% to 1,47,2000 won. Both stocks were heading for a fifth consecutive session of declines as the selloff in U.S. semiconductor shares spilled into Asia.

The losses followed news that Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) (SS:688825) had made progress on a next-generation DRAM design known as 4F², which could increase memory density.

CXMT is also targeting the launch of server DDR5 memory products using the technology by the end of 2026, intensifying concerns over future competition and pricing pressure.

U.S. memory chipmaker Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) fell 4% on Monday, while SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) slid 6%, reflecting broader investor concerns about China’s technological advances and the outlook for the sector.

South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI plunged nearly 7% to 5,944.31 points. Foreign investors were net sellers of 2.335 trillion won ($1.6 billion) worth of shares, while retail investors were net buyers of 1.311 trillion won.

The selloff also reflects growing caution over elevated valuations following a strong rally driven by demand for AI-related memory chips.
