Investing.com -- Applied Materials shares fell sharply Tuesday after the semiconductor equipment maker declined to provide an industry spending forecast at its investor day, leaving investors to weigh its bullish artificial intelligence outlook against uncertainty over the pace of new chipmaking capacity.

The stock was recently down 7.5% at $461.50, recovering from an earlier drop of as much as 9% to $452.81. The decline marked its steepest intraday selloff since July 28.

The weakness extended across the semiconductor equipment sector. KLA Corp. and Lam Research each fell about 4%, while ASML Holding declined 3%, with all three stocks recovering from their session lows. ASML is scheduled to report earnings Wednesday, putting the European chip-equipment maker’s results and outlook in focus as investors assess the strength of semiconductor capital spending.

Chief Executive Gary Dickerson expressed confidence that demand for computing power would continue to expand rapidly, supporting long-term investment in semiconductor manufacturing. However, the company stopped short of offering a specific forecast for wafer fabrication equipment (WFE) spending, a key indicator of demand for its chipmaking tools.

Dickerson pointed to several variables that could influence the industry’s near-term trajectory, including available factory space, supply-chain constraints and the financing of energy infrastructure. Those factors could affect how quickly manufacturers translate growing demand into actual spending on production equipment.

The distinction is important for Applied Materials and its peers. While AI-related demand is driving investment in advanced semiconductors, the timing of factory construction and equipment installations can determine when that spending translates into revenue.

Applied Materials has also emphasized the role of AI within its own operations, arguing that the technology can improve performance and strengthen its competitive position. Dickerson described AI as fundamental to the company’s competitiveness, reinforcing management’s confidence in the longer-term opportunity even as it withheld a near-term industry estimate.

ASML’s upcoming results could provide another indication of whether AI-related demand is translating into sustained investment across the semiconductor supply chain. As the leading supplier of extreme ultraviolet lithography systems used to manufacture advanced chips, the company is closely watched for signals about demand from major chipmakers and their willingness to expand production capacity.

For Applied Materials, the lack of a WFE forecast leaves investors without a concrete benchmark against which to measure management’s growth expectations. After this year’s substantial rally, the reaction highlights a key challenge for semiconductor equipment stocks: strong AI demand does not necessarily translate into a predictable timetable for capital spending.
