Investing.com -- Asian stocks were mixed on Monday as oil prices retreated amid uncertainty over a proposed Russia-Ukraine energy truce, while investors prepared for a week of U.S. inflation data and third-quarter earnings.

Trading was thin on Monday, with Japan’s cash equity markets closed for Sports Day and U.S. bond markets shut for Columbus Day. U.S. stock exchanges remained open, while Treasury cash trading was suspended for the holiday.

Wall Street extended its record-setting week on Friday, with the S&P 500 up 0.6%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining 0.8% and the Nasdaq Composite rising 0.6%, while Nasdaq 100 futures added 0.4% and S&P 500 futures climbed 0.3% in Asian trade.

Treasury yields reached their highest levels in 24 years last week, with the 10-year yield approaching 5.4%, while a gauge of U.S. investment-grade credit-default swaps climbed to its highest level since the Iran war began.

Markets are looking to U.S. consumer and producer inflation data and retail sales figures this week for clues on the Federal Reserve’s next moves.

Markets price an 18% chance of a Fed rate hike this month and an 85% probability of an increase in December.

Chip stocks mixed as TSMC earnings approach

South Korea’s KOSPI fell 2.6% as trading resumed after a long weekend. SK Hynix dropped 2.6%, Samsung Electronics lost 2.3% and LG Innotek plunged 13.1%.

Taiwan’s market also came under pressure, although individual suppliers diverged. Largan surged 7.9%, while Foxconn gained 2.6% and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing slipped 0.4%.

Investors are preparing for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing’s results on Thursday, when the world’s largest advanced-chip maker is expected to report a sixth consecutive quarter of record earnings as demand for AI chips and advanced CoWoS packaging remains strong.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.3% and mainland China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.1% MiniMax gained 0.9%, NAURA Technology rose 0.4%, Cambricon Technologies added 1%, NetEase climbed 2.6%, Alibaba advanced 1.8% and Tencent gained 0.8%.

Meanwhile,China and the EU reached a 16-point consensus on trade, investment, export controls and intellectual property, with Beijing agreeing to curb hybrid-car exports as the bloc considers safeguard measures.

MAAS tumbles as Firmus IPO cancellation rattles AI investment

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.8%, but MAAS Group shares fell about 12%, extending last week’s selloff after AI data-centre operator Firmus scrapped its planned $5 billion initial public offering.

Oil prices also retreated after initially rising on renewed Middle East tensions. Brent crude fell 1.6% to $103.01 a barrel after reaching $105.63 earlier, while U.S. crude futures lost 1.9% to $90.11. Prices remain below a recent peak of $109.97.

The latest volatility followed weekend attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on shipping and Riyadh’s main airport, raising fears of a broader conflict and further disruption to energy supplies.

President Donald Trump’s claim that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire added to uncertainty. Neither side confirmed a finalized agreement, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said no deal had been reached.

Trump’s proposal for Russia to increase diesel exports also drew objections from Republican and Democratic senators, who questioned whether it could be illegal.

Elsewhere, the S&P/ASX 200’s gain contrasted with declines across parts of Asia. New Zealand’s NZX 50 rose 0.4% to 13,801.22, Singapore’s Straits Times gained 0.7%, and Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite fell 0.5%.India’s Nifty 50 Futures climbed 1.4%.
